  • In specified wilderness areas it is required that backpackers and stock users store all their food, trash and anything with a scent inside an allowed bear-resistant canister or pannier from May 23 through October 31. These portable containers are the easiest and most effective method to protect you, your food and wild bears when packed efficiently.
  • In areas where canisters are not required, the Inyo National Forest strongly recommends that backpackers and stock users use an allowed bear-resistant canister or pannier.
  • If you choose to use the counter-balance method and hang your food from a tree branch please do it properly. Remember, this method may only be a delay tactic. Bears are successful at obtaining food hung in trees.
