  • Report bear sightings and problems to the nearest Ranger Station.
  • Store anything with an odor or the appearance of potential food in an approved bear-resistant canister or pannier. These portable containers are the easiest and most effective method to protect food and wild bears when packed efficiently). All other techniques (like the counter-balance method) are only delay tactics that bears eventually learn to defeat. The counter-balance method of storing food in trees can sometimes be effective but ONLY IF DONE PROPERLY with the recommended distances to the ground, branch, trunk, etc. Remember that garbage, soap, toothpaste, sunscreen, lip balm, etc. have the odor or appearance of food.
  • Never leave these items unattended (night or day) in camp or on the trail unless properly stored.
  • Leave empty packs on the ground with all pockets and flaps open to minimize damage if investigated by a bear looking for food.
