  • The National Park Service requires backpackers to carry and use allowed bear-resistant food storage canisters.
  • While backpacking in the wilderness
Bear resistant food containers ("bear canisters") are required for overnight hikers in all of the Yosemite Wilderness, except where bearproof food lockers are located. Counterbalance hanging of food is no longer permitted, as bears can easily climb trees. In Yosemite and the southern Sierra, bear canisters are the only effective and proven method of preventing bears from getting human food.

Food lockers are available as an alternative only at Little Yosemite Valley and all five High Sierra Camp campgrounds.

Don't forget to remove all food from your car before your backpacking trip!
